Bird Rescue: A Guide to Helping Our Feathered Friends
We often receive requests from concerned members on the Civic WhatsApp group about injured or abandoned chicks and birds. If you come across a feathered friend in need during this seasonal shift, here’s what you can do:
Where to Take Injured Birds:
Two fantastic organizations in Cape Town specialize in bird rescue and rehabilitation:
-
Cape of Good Hope SPCA: * Address: Corner 1st Avenue and First Road, Grassy Park
- Phone: 021 700-4158/4159
- After Hours: 083 326 1604
-
Tweet Tweet Rescue and Rehab: * Address: 19 Middelburg Avenue, Monte Vista
- Text only: 078 517 7061 (They hold a Cape Nature Permit for bird rehabilitation)
Important Considerations:
Sadly, severe wing injuries are common in birds, and sometimes the kindest option is euthanasia. The alternative might be a life in captivity, which isn’t ideal for these creatures of the sky.
What to Do When You Find an Injured Bird:
- Observe: Keep a safe distance to ensure the bird is truly alone and assess its condition without disturbing it.
- Secure (If Possible): If safe to do so, gently contain the bird.
- Contact Experts: Reach out to the SPCA or Tweet Tweet for guidance and assistance.
Safe Transportation:
- Use a well-ventilated cardboard box lined with a towel or tissue paper (avoid cotton wool).
- Keep the box in a dark, quiet environment to minimize stress.
- Do not attempt to feed or give the bird water.
- Maintain a suitable temperature, avoiding overheating. If using a heat pack, ensure the bird can move away from it if needed.
By following these guidelines, you can play a vital role in helping our feathered friends in need, especially during this time of seasonal transition. Remember, even small actions can make a big difference!

A symbol of resilience. This bird has overcome injury and is ready to soar again.
